Click for MoreThe County Commission held its first Budget Hearing on September 9, 2008 at the Governmental Center in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Libraries were in attendance and several of them address the Commissioners. Their remarks pointed out the importance of libraries to the community and urged restoration of funds as soon as permitted by the financial climate.

Remarks by Lynne Bruno at the 9/9/08 Broward County Commission Budget Hearing

My name is Lynne Bruno. I live at 900 Southwest 12th Street in Fort Lauderdale. For the past 15 years, I have both volunteered to read to pre-schoolers through the Library's Prime Time Program, and worked part-time as a consultant to the Youth Services Division at the Main Library. In that time, I have seen many wonderful things, among them, the following:

A Youth Services Librarian who was reading to a happy and responsive group of toddlers, preschoolers, and mothers holding babies in their arms.

A circulation Librarian, who with her own money, bought stickers to give to children to reward them for books they read.

A Prime Time volunteer, who came to so love reading to children, that she returned to school to earn her Library Science degree this, after a distinguished career serving as Chief of Protocol for General Colin Powell.

An outstanding teacher, in a free Library Computer Class, who helped a newly-arrived immigrant, who spoke little English, to master basic computer skills.

A group of Library Business Services employees who, again with their own money, gave a backpack full of school supplies to each of their Summer Youth workers, who were returning to school.

I hope these stories of library volunteers and employees who are themselves truly inspired, will inspire you, our County Commissioners, to continue to fund our Libraries and thereby continue to enrich our Broward community.
