An Important Milestone An Important Milestone

Click for Larger With accolades from private and public organizations, the Broward County Public Library opened its doors twenty five years ago, on April 29th, 1984.

Designed to complement downtown Fort Lauderdale, this magnificent eight-story building stands as an icon of knowledge and an advocate of education for all.

With spacious windows that overlook a plaza shadowed by noble trees, the ample and well designed floors make it the perfect place to research and work on any project.

The Broward County Main Library has and will continue to adapt itself to the needs of the community. It is not about books, magazines and newspapers only; it has expanded its technological offerings keeping in step with this new and exciting world. Customers can find talking books, electronic books, videos, DVDs, computer terminals that have access to the library catalogue, specialized information databases and, of course, the internet.

The Main Library has the distinction of being one of a select group of Federal Documents Depository Libraries, State of Florida Documents Depository Libraries, and Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries, making it a research paradise for many in and out of Broward County.

But all doesn't end there, the Library offers many, varied and important programs for adults and youth; from storytelling for all to classic concerts; from “A Day at the Library” for schools to craft making for teenagers; from book discussions to special art expositions and an auditorium that hosts a variety of the expressions of art in addition to the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book and a moon rock on permanent loan from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The Main Library is also the campus library for Florida Atlantic University's (FAU) downtown campus, for Kaiser University and The Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) Media Center, with specialized materials for parents and teachers of children with special needs. The School Board of Broward County houses its Professional Collection here as well.

Come to the Library; after you have benefited from all its services, you can end your visit with a delicious treat from the many establishments in the area or a refreshing walk by the river.
