Groundbreaking Reads was a 2013 summer reading program for adults in various libraries throughout Broward County. In addition to books and book discussions topics such as resume writing, jazz, gardening, sewing and movies were also included. Many of the libraries also sponsored Groundbreaking Technology, where patrons learned how to download free music, books and magazines.

The Friends sponsored the Groundbreaking series which included a door prize of a Kindle that was raffled off at the end of the series. Entries were available to people who are Broward County library card holders and attended the Groundbreaking Reads programs at the Main Library. Gerri Sant was the winner of the new Kindle. To quote Gerri:
"I love the library system and am a frequent user. I love the many events, book clubs and the availability of both print and electronic media. This Kindle just adds another dimension."
